Shine Community Skills Project

Many of you will know that I’ve been working as an Outreach Worker on the Sandpits Estate since July 2009. My project is being funded by the European Social Fund and Marches Housing & Charitable Trust and it aims to help unemployed people living in ‘Ludlow East’ learn some new skills and build up confidence.

One of the first things I did was to go and knock on all the doors on the estate to ask people what kinds of things they might be interested in joining in with. Since then we’ve put on arts & crafts workshops, cookery courses, a fit club, confidence building sessions, family learning activities, an open day at Rockspring and a Christmas Fair, to name but a few!

More courses are planned for the next 6 months where local people can learn IT, hairdressing, communication and catering skills as well as meet others in the same situation and gain experience for their CV’s. Most of the activities are held at the Rockspring centre, though occasionally we have hired the church rooms too which has given people a chance to come inside in a non-threatening way.

Whilst this isn’t a Christian project, I’m convinced that God has had a hand in getting me this job, and that this is His role for me for the time being. I believe He prompted me to call it the ‘Shine’ project and I’m really pleased to have had the opportunity to get to know some local people better.

Please pray for me and for the 25 or so local people who’ve been involved so far. Please pray that good relationships continue to be built up and that the project will be protected from spiritual attack. Please also pray for the work of the Rockspring Centre and for more opportunities for us as a church to get involved in local activities.

Despite the negative publicity that sometimes surrounds ‘Sandpits,’ there are some great people living on our doorstep and I hope and pray that they, like us, will be given the chance to let their lights shine…

Liz
